Grand Champion Rabbit-Tessa Mashburn

Stewer-7lbs 12 oz My name is Tessa Mashburn and I’m the livestock youth rep for the rabbits. The rabbits that I breed and raise are champagne D’argents; they originate from the champagne region of France. Champagnes have a commercial body shape, full shoulders and deep hind quarters. They are solid black when born but slowly as they age, their coat turns silver. I chose the specific heritage breed because I love rabbits and they have a finer bone structure than common meat breeds. I’ve learned sustainability practices that help our soil from using every part of the rabbit. I hope through this experience as a Dutchess County 4-H’er, I’m contributing to even to a small part of sustainable food systems.

Grand Champion Steer-Benjamin Prentice

Hello, my name is Benjamin Prentice. This is my sixth year in Here Comes The Beef 4-H club. Throughout the years of being in 4-H, it has set me up to grow and start many new adventures in life with many great people helping me along the way. It is very sad knowing this will be my last year in 4-H. However, I am very grateful for everything I have learned along the way. I’m currently entering my second year at SUNY Cobleskill where I will be getting a degree in Ag Business. After I graduate from college, I plan to open my own USDA slaughterhouse.

Reserve Champion Steer Henry Skuza

Hello, my name is Henry Skuza. I am 13 years old. I go to Millbrook Middle School, and I am in the Here Comes The Beef 4-H club. I will be selling my steer, Duke, this year. He is a crossbred that is 18 months old. I have enjoyed showing him at many different shows in many different states. We have consistently been in the top half of our class at the bigger shows and winning a few of the smaller shows we have been too. I really love having beef cattle and look forward to what is to come in the future.

Grand Champion Hog-Nathan Clum

Nathan has been showing hogs since he could walk. As he has gotten older, he uses his experience and knowledge to manage his program. He has reinvested his money into his new projects. He spends a lot of time watching hog sales looking for “good ones” and likes to decide the feed rations each of his hogs need to look their best. Outside of the barn, Nathan is headed into 8th grade at Germantown Central School. He is a member of the National Jr Honor Society, plays Football for Red Hook and Basketball for Germantown. You can find him shooting hoops while he waits for the hogs to finish eating.
