Riley Mahaffey: Reserve Champion Steer
4H/FFA club: Here Comes The Beef Species you are selling: Beef Market Steer My name is Riley Mahaffey. I’m 17 years old, going into my senior year of High School. I’ve had the privilege of raising my steer, “Brut.” Brut was born, bred, and raised right on our family farm in Amenia, NY. He’s a Simmental steer. From day 1, we could tell that Brut was something special. He’s always had the qualities to make him a standout. He’s proven that time and time again. Brut has taken home the title of Champion Simmental Steer at 4 different shows, which is a huge accomplishment. His overall performance makes him an ideal market steer for any buyer looking for quality. In addition to working with Brut, I’m also involved in both FFA and 4-H. I currently serve as the President of my 4-H club and my FFA chapter. I have been a member of the Dutchess County “Here Comes the Beef” 4-h club for 6 years. It is with sadness to say this is my last steer I will be selling at the fair. As I will be attending college next year for Business, sales and marketing. Agriculture has always been a huge part of my life, and I take pride in being hands-on and committed to everything I do from daily chores and show prep to leadership roles in my organizations.Raising Brut has been one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had. He’s not only taught me more about responsibility, and dedication, but he’s also given me a great last steer to sell in this sale.

I go to Houssatonic Valley Regional High School and attend their ag and FFA program. This year for my 4-H project I raised a Bread and Own Steer, meaning his mother was bred in our commercial cow calf operation and he was born and raised on our farm. This steer and some of my other show cattle and I spent the spring and summer going to a few different shows in many different states including NY, MA, MI, PA, VA, WI and NJ at the shows we learned a lot about showmanship and grew as a team. When I am not showing, I am home taking care of my line of show cattle and our families commercial heard of britches whites. Every day I care for my animals by feeding them twice a day, washing them and practicing showing. When I am not caring for my cows, I like to help my dad and papa on the farm. I enjoy driving the tractors learning all the aspects of caring for the animals. When I get older, I want to be a farmer and run a cattle ranch.
